If you wear a beret to a comedy show
(To the tune of If You Give A Mouse A Cookie)
If you wear a beret to a comedy show, make sure you sit front row
For the comedienne will notice its glory at the top of the show
Dim the stage lights low, is that a cap I see?
A beret, a beret, a beret it would be!
Baby pink merino wool, itching your scalp
Your gay friends will cheer, they will squeal, they will clap!
If you wear a beret to a comedy show
Mary Beth Barone will love it
And I have found a new hat for which I am smit.
— an original poem by Olivia Hawkins about wearing a Ganni beret to Mary Beth Barone’s New Joke Night on Thursday in Park Slope.
Ganni beret that was stuck in Canadian customs for weeks. H&M wool top. Redone jeans. Kith adidas, linked similar.
Friday night I stayed in, which felt extraordinarily earned. I ordered pho from Nha Trang One to try and kick this cough I’ve had all week, watched a crime documentary, and played Animal Crossing for hours on end before going to sleep at 10. The life of a single Gen-Z woman in the big city—what dreams are made of.
I was hyper-productive on Saturday due to an early morning visit from my plumber. My day started approximately three hours earlier than it usually does, so I worked out, voted, went grocery shopping, got a Russian manicure, cleaned up my apartment, and watched all of Nobody Wants This season 2 on Netflix. I’ve been experiencing some anxiety about not being home to Connecticut since Labor Day (I prefer to go once a month), but this Saturday reminded me why I love the city so much. I grounded myself by doing things that made me feel good, spending time with those who make me happy, and cleaning up my little habitat.
If I had to experience the same weather conditions every day for the rest of my life, I would choose what was happening on Saturday. You need to have the rainy days to appreciate the sunny ones—yeah yeah, whatever. Saturday was simply the most beautiful day for as long as I can remember, both in temperance and activity. I did a lot of things I haven’t done in a while:
Steamed and showered at the Equinox
Wore a SKIMS dress
Walked across town to dinner
Enjoyed a reservation I made months in advance
My favorite evening walk to do is from East Houston to West, starting from the Lower East Side and ending somewhere Tribeca meets the West Village. I would be dining at Cove, which made the perfect destination for the perfect walk. I get to check out the scene at so many hotspots—Raf’s, Torrisi, Temple Bar amongst others that remind me the city is alive and well even when I don’t feel like I have the energy to keep up with it.
Cove was excellent and exceeded my expectations. Flynn McGarry nailed the Fig Martini, which is now one of my favorite point-blank across the city and I’m not typically a gin gal, and we opted for splitting the lobster instead of getting a ton of small plates as we usually would. I ended the evening with their signature cosmopolitain, and they switched out the coaster for a fresh one with each drink I ordered. They also had these little rolled up towelettes in the bathroom instead of paper towels, which I found extremely chic. Also amazing bathroom lighting. When getting dressed, I wanted to channel lady of Cove and my parasocial relationship of the moment,
, but I’m still waiting to find the perfect flower broach. For some reason, I pulled my long sleeve SKIMS dress out of the back of my closet where it had gone untouched since my move last year, and paired it with a choker I also hadn’t worn in a while, my drippy ring from Avec Joyeria, and my favorite Justine Clenquet devil earrings. I completed Saturday’s look with a cashmere wrap instead of a jacket—tis the season—and my Tabi slipons.

On Sunday, I headed across the Hudson to Secaucus, New Jersey, for a Kering Sample Sale. I’m not the traditional sample sale attendee despite my love for discounted luxury—I hate waiting in lines, I don’t have the grit, and everything always ends up being way more expensive than advertised. A dear friend gave me the gracious opportunity to shop this one, and the prices were staggeringly amazing, so I couldn’t say no. I walked away with this Gucci Aphrodite Bag in a deep autumnal red with the interlocking G’s I proclaimed are coming back, a bag I had mistaken for a Jackie at first, but am thrilled to have made out with like a bandit. It’s my Christmas present to myself this year, and I think I will use it for the rest of my life. I also found out it has an extender to wear messenger-style, which will be amazing for heavy coats that make shoulder straps difficult during the winter months.

This will probably be my last sale performance for a while. As I write this, I’ve been unable to get off my couch for the last two hours. I used the remaining adrenaline I had left to go to the Union Market to get some groceries for the week, and left with a pint of Cookies n’ Panna (amongst chicken cutlets and broccoli). I plan on cracking into that while I resume my Gossip Girl rewatch.
I’m excited for you all to see my Halloween costume next Monday. I think you will all find it very funny if you know who it is. It’s a pretty deep cultural cut. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to wear this to Tame Impala on Halloween night, but I have a fun party this Thursday it’s perfect for. Here’s a hint—she loved to dance. This is the most laid-back Halloween I’ve ever had and I couldn’t be happier about it. Plans fell into my lap in the most fantastic of ways.
On Friday during work, I tried Maru in Williamsburg. I had heard of it from the Armchair Expert podcast where it was frequently raved about, and have been wanting to try their signature “Cream Top”. It was good, really good, not very fast and definitely expensive, but good. The space is beautiful, and it gives you an excuse to stop into Sorbara’s (not that you need one).
My favorite month is swiftly slipping away from us. I plan on celebrating to the fullest this week, watching spooky movies in between my plans and parties, wearing lots of hats and breaking out my cashmere wrap more than just on the weekend. There were already lots of people of all ages celebrating this weekend, from the children local to my neighborhood to 19 year-old NYU girls in the West Village, and I admire their dedication to the spirit. Maybe I’m not such a Halloween Hater after all…
This Friday is the first Friday Coffee from me to one lucky paid subscriber. It is also the announcement of my first Coffee Order Gift Guide installment, which I cannot wait to share. So many exciting things happening, and per usual, I am so thankful for the support. Talk to you then…
