I'm ready for Midnights to ruin my fall (and beyond)
In the best way possible
This week, for many of us, is like the Super Bowl.
I’ve in the past discussed my affinity for things like the 2008 Olympics, the 2010 World Cup, the Met Gala and more events that seismically shift the energy in the universe for better, bringing us all together in ways that we can all look back on and smile.
A new Taylor Swift album is perhaps #1 on the list of all of these things that brings a community together.
There’s a different feeling in the air this week—-the air is crisper, the temperature is dropping, the leaves are crunchier and we’re all anticipating the drop of the soundtrack of the rest of our autumn, winter, and quite frankly foreseeable future.
The score of walking around in colder air is Folklore and Evermore for me. While I listen to both all year round, Taylor Swift owns the months of September through January. They both evoke such warm and fuzzy feelings of realizing things, falling in love, but also heartbreak in a delicious way that makes you want to go somewhere isolated, wear a cardigan (😉) and think for a long, long time.
Taylor is bringing us a new lens to look at the world through. She’s masterfully crafted a story that we’re waiting with bated breath to hear, new characters to be introduced to and new songs for us to equate every single part of our lives to, whether or not it’s dramatic to do so.
She also seems to have this ability to know when we need something most. Whether it’s a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers or dropping flawless sister albums in the midst of a pandemic, Taylor has been able to sense when exactly it is that we’ll appreciate her the most. I saw a Tiktok the other day that was expressing excitement for the resurgence of 2014 pop. If you didn’t have a Tumblr girl phase you may not be aware, but The 1975 also dropped an album last week, giving us songs straight out of a time where King Kylie reigned supreme, the Arctic Monkeys controlled every emotion I had, and I was posting things on Tumblr that in no way related to my actual life in any way, shape, or form. The clips that we’ve gotten from Midnights are giving that early 2010’s indie-pop realness. And if the small bits and pieces of that aren’t enough, there’s a collaboration with the queen herself, Lana Del Ray on the docket. If we’re not careful, I’m going to have a slate of skater skirts and Oxford shoes on the way to my apartment before the sun rises tomorrow morning.
The older I get, the more admiration I have for Taylor Swift (if that’s even possible). Besides being one of the best writers of all time, she’s one of the only artists these days that comes out of the woodwork to authentically share what she has for us, instilling a type of excitement inside of my heart that’s rarely felt elsewhere. Her music has immense substance, allowing everyone who listens to it to feel as though they’re embarking on a journey, one they can relate to their own personal lives on some level, or one they’ve never been on before. She’s effortlessly forceful, the opposite of power hungry, and I’ve never once thought that anything she’s done has been short of genius.
Besides just Midnights, there are rumblings of a potential world tour also in the air. The shortlist of artists that I would drain my bank account to see, is in fact, a short list. Although I’ve previously mentioned my fear of the number spent on one Mr. Harry Styles, no show will ever compare to the one I saw that was the 1989 World Tour. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard a stadium of 60,000 people screaming Love Story, and with not one, not two, but THREE new albums on top of the re-releases for us to hear live and in person for the first time, I’m ready to put myself into financial ruin.
Tonight is a big night for all of us. And tomorrow is going to be like waking up into a completely different autumn than we’ve been living for the past few weeks. There’s a new soundtrack to our lives, new characters to learn and most importantly, new lyrics to memorize in order to keep up on Twitter. If anyone needs me, I’ll probably be taking a long walk around NYC, headphones in world out, wearing some sort of scarf, and thinking for a long, long time.

So true
