Salt air
An August check-in.
Summer is basically over. I’ve been feeling that way since July, however, and think I’d consider the thick of June when summer really felt like summer.
I historically love the month of August. June is always stressful because of my impending birthday, and the past two July’s have been spent preparing for a move. August is when the season really starts to settle down and I allow myself to enjoy the (disgustingly) warm weather and all that it brings.
I recently moved into my first apartment by myself (hence last week’s hiatus), which is blowing my mind a bit. I’ve never felt like such a baby adult in my life. If I thought when I was writing Teenage Woman that I was confused by my age vs. how I feel, I had no idea what was coming. One of my best friends who coincidentally moved into her own place at the same time as me put it perfectly—it feels like you’re staying at a hotel, every night for the foreseeable future. I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve stayed in a hotel room by myself, but I always relished in those moments. The main difference is that my new place doesn’t have room service or maid service, but other than that, it’s still pretty great. It’s giving:
Fall is my favorite season, so I’m very excited for that to be happening before we know it. At this rate, it’ll be 90 degrees until October, but waking up and walking around the city on a crisp morning makes me so happy. I also love fall fashion the most, especially because I hate wearing shorts and I love to layer. Since I said the F word, this seems like a good place to share with you my current fall vibe curation:

Sorry for picking mostly blonde people. I’m not blonde as you all know. They tend to dominate my Pinterest algorithm. I should look for inspiration elsewhere than Pinterest, but aforementioned, it’s my favorite social media. At least I’m utilizing the hours I spend scrolling it on my iPad in bed for something. Special double-mention to Kirsten Dunst.
I’m eager to read Didion & Babitz, a new novel by Lili Anolik pictured above, and extremely jealous of everyone I’m seeing online who got an advanced copy. As someone who identifies as what TikTok would call a “thought daughter”, I actually couldn’t dream up a better read. Until then, I’ll be rereading Play It As It Lays and picking up a copy of Sex and Rage to aptly prepare myself.
Other than that, my fall feels like it’s going to be defined by even less color than before, but not in a bad way. I’m happily leaning into black, white, and grey all over, mainly because I’m still obsessed with CBK. It’s just easy and it’s chic. I’m not sure what to do about shoes. The past six months of my life have been dominated by ballet flats. You forget about the pain of an exposed foot on a cold day until you feel brave enough to try it for the first time after the summer. It feels like time to invest in a good boot, but that goes against my mid-year resolution of spending less. I guess some purchases can’t be avoided, however. What boots are we wearing this fall? Slide into my dms to tell me, please. Maybe I can find something good on The Real Real…
My final fun purchase for the foreseeable future (hopefully) was the Sandy Liang x Salomon Speedcross with satin ribbon detailing, and dare I say there may have been nothing better to end on.
I was afraid they wouldn’t be as wearable as I’d want them to be, but they looked a lot better in person than in the previews online, and the ribbon makes getting dressed so easy because it completes the outfit. I styled them with my gauchos and a t-shirt, two of the most simple silhouettes in my closet, and they were the perfect addition.
The highlight of July was definitely the Olympics, even though most of the best events have happened during August. I cannot stop crying. I’ve never been so emotional. Suni Lee and Simone Biles simply cannot come on my screen without the waterworks. They’ve been through so much and never fail to bring the American people so much pride, joy, and wins. I forgot how amazing it is to wake up and turn on the Olympics, and just binge watch all day. On Friday afternoon, I suddenly realized after turning on Swimming when I woke up, Equestrianism was on my screen. I didn’t care. I’ll miss it when it’s gone.
