The Olivia Hawkins TIME 100 List
Innovators, artists, leaders, and tastemakers in my eyes.
Recently, I paid $0.99 for a subscription to TIME Magazine, so I could understand why Joe Rogan was on the list this year.
Then, I went into a wormhole of who else was nominated. Reese Witherspoon on why Zoë Kravitz is impossibly cool (we know), Ryan Secrest on why Kris Jenner is an innovator (we know), and even Lena Dunham on why Sally Rooney is one of the most impactful writers of the millennial generation (once again, we know).
After getting fatigued due to the abundance of obvious statements, I decided to list my top ten Olivia Hawkins TIME 100 recipients, who all happen to be super cool, Gen-Z (or adjacent) women. These people also may have already been named in past years. But who cares.
10. Artists: Phoebe Bridgers
The first time I listened to Phoebe Bridgers, it was the Summer of 2021. I wanted to be apart of something; the artistic, cool-girl crowd on TikTok and Twitter that would refer to her at the drop of a hat.
What I didn’t know when listening was that Phoebe speaks for the people. And by the people, I mean the now-21-year-old-girls who grew up longing for something better. Grew up longing for something more. Who were once in high school, getting into fights with their parents and romanticizing the guy they were dating who still lives in their town, who was sick, and married.
As she once wrote: how can a person know everything at 18, but nothing at 22?
9. Innovator: Deux Moi
While this week, actually, Vulture claims that they know who Deux Moi is, I truly wonder if we will ever see the wizard behind the emerald curtain.
Despite this, Deux Moi has created a new standard for celebrity gossip, while toying the line of what’s appropriate, and what’s not.
They’ve set the bar for breaking news and sourcing, many publications such as the Daily Mail, People, Vogue, etc. even using simply @deuxmoi on Instagram as a source for stories, such as Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles’ relationship, Kendall Jenner starting 818, and the AROD-JLo cheating scandal.
In elementary school, we learn that a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. Deux Moi is Instagram. But, Instagram has a long way before becoming what Deux Moi has. And that, my friends, is a place where everyone begs to be ‘anon, plz.”
7. Icon: Julia Fox
Julia Fox has set the precedent for what the word ‘celebrity’ means in 2022.
With the claim to fame as Kanye West’s first real (?) relationship post Kim Kardashian, Julia struck while the iron was hot, making sure her legacy lasted long after what Wikipedia states was “[giving'] people something to talk about" amid an ongoing pandemic.[31]”
She’s gone from a bizarre, memeworthy D-lister to a shameless supernova, giving fame new terms and conditions. Will she ask the paparazzi to stop taking photos of her son? Of course. But will she give them her information to plan a scheduled shoot at a different time? Absolutely. Will she make her own two piece set out of a small Hanes tank top? You betchya. Will she also open the LaQuan Smith Fall 2022 show? She has range. Will she wear underwear to the supermarket? You don’t?
6. Pioneer: Emma Chamberlain
This may seem like a stretch to some, but let me explain.
Emma Chamberlain is the definitive entity of what it is to be a Gen-Z star. Long gone are the days of pretending everything is fine and dandy, putting on a show for your millions of followers, and putting up a wall that seemingly no one can cross to understand who the real you is.
Emma takes to her podcast platform to showcase what it’s like to have such a large platform at a young age, all while staying true to her identity. She may not be the 17-year-old cooking in her mom’s apartment and driving around to get Philz in San Francisco, but she’s also not selling out. Instead of starting a beauty brand like the rest of influencers her age, she’s started a coffee company. Instead of staying on YouTube because that’s where she makes the most money, she’s decided to quit for the benefit of her mental health. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and that’s a refreshing drink of water this day in age.
5. Leader: Naomi Osaka
A trait I inherited from my father is that greatness makes me cry. It happens with Serena Williams nearly every time she comes on the screen, and now, Naomi Osaka.
We treat athletes in extremes. They’re either heroes or villains, super human or people we think that we can say anything and everything to, just because something didn’t go our way. The biggest way, to me, that Naomi is a leader, is her vulnerability. She’s paved the way for athletes to come, in all genders and spectrums of sports, to express their feelings and not be afraid of doing so.
She’s not afraid of the backlash, and quite frankly, she’s got her priorities straight. No matter the fame or fortune that comes from a Wimbledon or winning a Grand Slam, none of that can happen without putting yourself first.
4. Artist: Cazzie David
I started following Cazzie after what I think may have been a profile of her, maybe on Vogue or The Cut. She’s a writer, and the daughter of famed comedian, Larry David, and the OG ex-girlfriend of Pete Davidson.
Her book of essays Nobody Asked For This is quite possibly one of my top three most formative books I’ve ever read. It’s a hysterical, jawdroppingly authentic take on her life so far, including being the said-girlfriend of Ariana Grande’s single “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored”, the fact that she is embarrassed by absolutely everything (which I painstakingly relate to), and many, many more trials and tribulations.
She’s a key voice of our generation, her writing style is something I aspire to meet, and I can’t wait until she creates a show or movie or something and wins a gazillion awards, so I can tell all of you that I told you so.
3. Innovator: Ziwe Fumudoh
If Ziwe doesn’t replace one of the late-night Jimmies in like, two years, I’m going to be pissed. The only reason I can imagine that she wouldn’t is because some people just aren’t equipped to understand the genius that she is.
Host of the Showtime late night variety show of the same name, Ziwe is a 30-year-old writer and comedian, who uses her platform to discuss important topics such as race, politics, current events, and more, all while making her viewers feel the utmost comfortable and uncomfortable simultaneously through elite humor.
Her debut show featured Fran Lebowitz and Gloria Steinem, she’s made Charlamagne the God sweat, and she’s teamed up with comedic starlets like Ilana Glazer to make discussing important topics, quite frankly more fun. Why do we need Bill Mahers in 2022 when we have Ziwe?
2. Icon: Anne Hathaway
This is completely influenced by her absolute serve at Cannes this year, but I also have facts to stand by this.
Anne Hathaway has proven time and time again that she only is getting better, with no glass ceiling in sight. Her performance in WeCrashed as I previously have mentioned on this blog, was perhaps one of her best yet. She’s taken our breath away for over twenty years, and I truly can’t wait to see what she does for the next 20.
Whether she’s Andy Sachs, Rebekah Neumann, or Fantine, she’s serving. Always
1. Pioneer: Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has revived the international pop superstar. We lost it for a second there. The Katy Perry’s of 2010, the Madonna’s of the 80s, we were losing people who toured for 150 shows, danced the entire time, and put on a true spectacle.
The pandemic may have had something to do with that loss, but Dua is everything that we needed out of a pop star. She dances, she sings, and serves lewks, she cares about the mental health of her and her fans, and, she’s genuine.
Future Nostalgia got a lot of us through the pandemic, and it seemed like a long while until we would ever see Dua in concert. Now, in the middle of a worldwide tour that’s spanned from February 2022 until November 2022, it doesn’t seem like she’s going to stop anytime soon.
