Things that I would consider to be my "Roman Empire"
There are a lot.
To be frank, I don’t necessarily believe in the whole “Roman Empire” trend on TikTok. I think a lot of it is just boyfriend or husband content, which is something I’m not the target demographic for.
However, it does kind of sum up the everlasting obsessions that we tend to acquire as we progress through life. I for one, have many things that constantly pop into my brain as I walk through my life, seemingly for no apparent reason at all. Here’s a list of what they are for me, personally.
These books:
Starting off extremely strong. I think about these books all of the time. I’ve even been tempted to pick one up when I peruse around a children’s book department (which is not often, but has occurred more than once). I would go as far to say that they were my original Roman Empire, and taught me how to Roman-empire about things. Shoutouts to Who Was Steve Jobs, Who Was Harry Houdini, and Who Was Sacagawea?
The movie L.O.L. (2012)
There are few people on this earth, past and present, cooler in my eyes than Miley Cyrus’ title character, Lola, in the movie L.O.L. I know I share an obsession for this movie with a few of my friends, and as I rewatched it this past weekend, I can confirm that my infatuation is alive and well. The fact that these kids are supposed to be like 16? Insane. Lola’s bedroom? Still need. Lola’s journal? Got me writing again. Lola’s outfits? Inspo for the fall.
Total Eclipse of the Heart: Glee Version
Glee as a whole is something I struggle to forget about, not that I want to in any shape, way, or form. I can’t recall a time before this musical number where music rocked me in such a way, and this song is constantly an itch my brain cannot scratch. I also felt very passionately about the Jesse St. James / Finn Hudson / Rachel Berry love triangle, and honestly, still do.
Finding out who Princess Diana was and what happened to her
I think I was still in elementary school when I learned who Princess Diana was, and I remember my little sister getting a book from our local book store when she was in her history buff phase at the ripe age of six. As many young girls in their twenties and thirties, I think about Princess Diana a lot. Especially as someone who cares way too much about pop culture, and fashion for that matter.
THIS Camille Rowe Vogue YouTube video
I truly think my entire sense of style was shaped around this video. I’ve seen it one hundred times. Please text my personal phone number if you’ve also seen this and are obsessed with it. It taught me what a French press coffee maker is. I wanted those star boots more than anything. I think about Camille Rowe every time I put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. It had unforeseen impact on my life. This is also to flex that I’ve had Camille as my personal style icon since 2017, unlike everyone else who just knows her as the Cherry girl.
The September Issue documentary
On a serious note, this documentary is probably one of the top three reasons as to why I got into fashion. On a less serious note, I used to watch this on my mom’s black Video iPod on plane rides. I still watch it from time to time, but in any scenario where there’s hostility in the workplace, or it’s September, I think about this.
Send this to someone who needs to watch L.O.L.
